Tent Set Up

Simple to set up 2-pole freestanding design

Summary: Favorable Reviews

One of the easiest tent to set up and takedown. I absolutely love the rainfly. It covers almost the whole tent. No doubt that the material used is of high quality. You can say that just by looking at it.

Teal Thumbs Down Logo

Summary: Unfavorable Reviews

I don't get the idea of why a big tent like this has only one storage place inside. Other tents have more storage. The rainfly has no eave so, there is a big possibility that the rain will get inside.

SPECS AND CONFIGURATIONS

The Taurus 5 Outfitter has two doors and a peak center height of 6' 0, which is a tiny bit smaller than the average height of the 30 different 5 person tents we have examined With 80 square feet of space inside, it is a little bit smaller than some other 5-person tents, and it could be a little tight for you and, up to four other campers during the whole of the 3-seasons, this tent is approved for use in, smaller tents similar to this one generally make a great choice for campers who prefer spending loads of time outside of their tent exploring.

Many of the great points about dome tents are, that they are generally speaking lightweight, making them easy to carry around. In nearly all cases, tents used for backpacking are of the dome type. They are generally speaking, freestanding and very simple to set up. In good weather, you could do without securing the tent with stakes and ropes, not that this is recommended.

Dome tents are without a doubt the most common of all the other types of tents you will find when camping. They tend to do better in the rain than other types, allowing rain to roll off the sloped walls, unlike cabin tents that have flat roofs, resulting in the water pooling on the roof. The simplest dome tent will have a rectangular floor, slanted walls two or more poles which cross in the center of the roof. Because of the way they are made, it is typically considered that they are best for up to a maximum of 6 people.

Below you can find a list of the tent's strongest and weakest points.

PROS

  1. Freestanding. The Taurus Outfitter can support its own weight on any terrain. It does not need to be staked down in most cases. But in case of strong winds, it is always best to secure it to the ground with the included steel stakes and guylines.
  2. Vestibules. Having two vestibules. Affords you somewhere to store shoes and other items that can get dirty, muddy, this is a big plus.
  3. Has Gear Loft. It is good to see Alps Mountaineering adding a gear loft in the interior to store some of your things.
  4. More than one door. With 2 doors, it is simpler to get in and out of the tent, in the middle of the night if needed.
  5. The rainfly completely covers the tent body. The rainfly covers the whole body of the tent from the top to the bottom and has a waterproof rating of 0mm. Meaning it will easily protect you against heavy downpours.
  6. Available in other sizes. Alps Mountaineering has also made this model available in Other Sizes.

CONS

  1. Susceptible to wind. Because of its size and shape, the Taurus may not do well in strong winds if it is not firmly secured with the provided guy lines and stakes. Even though the tent is listed as freestanding in all but very calm conditions, one would want to stake and tie it down correctly.
  2. Not roomy. With a floor area of 80 square feet, the Taurus 5 is smaller than quite a lot of the 30 other 5 person tents we have looked at.
  3. No windows. With no windows it is not simple to keep the tent ventilated on a hot summers night.
  4. Footprint not Included. There is no included footprint, there is one sold separately specifically for the Taurus 5 footprint Even though the floor may be made of 210D 110T Nylon Oxford, it is still better to protect it further with a footprint, especially on rough terrain.
  5. Sloping walls. Even though Dome tents have heaps of qualities to be positive about. The sloping sides do tend to make it all the more smaller inside.

CONCLUSION

4.3 Stars Logo

Our Ratings: 4.3 STARS

Alps Mountaineering's Taurus 5 Outfitter tent is really good for car camping. There are a couple of other points not already mentioned above which, we noticed and liked, while researching the model: The Taurus Outfitter Series has 2 key upgrades: oversized #10 door zippers and a heavy duty nylon oxford floor., For poles, we use aircraft alloy 7000 series aluminum that are strong and lightweight. and The vestibules also serve as automatic guy-out points when the weather gets a little nasty..

With good ratings, quite a few reviews and a minimum headroom of 6' and 80 square feet of space to play with, this tent is like your very own miniature flat. It will allow you and up to 3 other friends to enjoy some delightful time enjoying nature. We found a decent amount of positive points about the tent that you can look at above.

If you found this page looking for recommendations about this specific tent, our view is, it would make for a good purchase. In case you just happened to land on this website while looking for a new tent having never heard of this brand or this model previously, it is perhaps a good idea to look at a few more similar tents.

Value for money: As far as value for your dollar, this tent is a tad bit more pricey than the average price of all the thirty-four, five-person tents we have studied, this alone by itself is not a negative thing. One should also look at other factors in detail, as we do for every tent.

When we measure the valuation of a tent, we reflect upon tons of conditions, looking for areas where the tent could outshine other similar tents and where it is not quite as good. In this case, with a total score of 4.3 and the price info above, one can spot that with a cost of $249.99 info_outline The Taurus 5 Outfitter is a very good purchase even though it could be perceived as a tiny bit costly when set side by side with comparable tents.

Its overall score shows that the quality and space the tent provides make it a very good choice for campers wanting a tent that will be used for plenty of years. It is also worth noting it is discounted by 29% from the manufactures suggested retail price. It could make a good choice for nearly all campers looking for an adequate three-season dome tent to go camping with, that will serve you well for years to come.
