Summary: Favorable Reviews

A 5-star tent. I love that ALPS uses large poles instead of thinner ones. Excellent ventilation and the design is not cheap looking.

Summary: Unfavorable Reviews

Poles may be vulnerable. It's not that durable for me. The design is too weak for me. Zippers are a little problematic if you don't take care of it.

SPECS AND CONFIGURATIONS

The Taurus 4 has two windows and two doors and a peak center height of 4' 4 which is 12 inches smaller than the average height of the 129 other 4 person tents we have studied. With 64 square feet of space inside, it is a tiny bit smaller than some other 4-person tents, and it could be a little tight for you and, up to three other campers all through the 3-seasons this tent is recommended for. Smaller tents similar to this one generally make a very nice choice for campers that welcome spending plenty of time outside of their tent exploring.

Some of the fantastic points about dome tents are, that they are for, the most part light, making them simple to carry around. In nearly all instances, tents used for backpacking are of the dome type. They are generally speaking, freestanding and very straightforward to set up. In calm weather, you can do without guy lines and stakes, not that this is suggested.

Dome tents are easily the most common of all the different types of tents you will find when camping. They tend to fair better in bad weather than other types, allowing water to easily slide off the slanted walls, unlike cabin tents that have flat roofs, resulting in the water pooling on the top of the tent. The simplest dome tent should have a rectangular floor, slanted walls two or more poles which converge in the middle of the roof. Due to their construction, it is generally considered that they are best for up to a maximum of 6 people.

Underneath you can browse an account of the tent's pros and cons.

PROS

  1. Freestanding. The Taurus can support its own weight on any terrain. It does not even have to be staked down in most cases. But in case of strong winds, it is always best to secure it to the ground with the included steel stakes and guylines.
  2. Vestibules. Having two vestibules. Offers you a place to store shoes and other things that can get dirty, muddy, this is a huge plus.
  3. Has Gear Loft. It is nice to see Alps adding a gear loft in the interior to store some of your things.
  4. More than one door. With 2 doors, it is simpler to get in and out of the tent, in the middle of the night if needed.
  5. More than one window. With 2 openings it is easier to keep the tent cool on a hot summers night.
  6. Durable, water-resistant floor. The floor material is 75D 185T poly taffeta, which is a substantially thick and high-strength fabric. Meaning the base is not prone to rips and punctures. Also, the material has a 2000 mm waterproofing rating, which is very good for most circumstances.
  7. The rainfly completely covers the tent body. The rainfly covers the whole body of the tent from the top to the bottom and has a waterproof rating of 1500mm. Meaning it will easily protect you against heavy downpours.
  8. Plenty of Positive Reviews The Taurus 4 has Lots of awesome Reviews
  9. Impressive Ratings The Taurus 4 has some of the best ratings of all the tents on optimumtents.com
  10. Other sizes are available. Alps has also made this model available in Other Sizes.
  11. Low price. It is a great buy for a 4 person dome tent that provides this much space. Not a lot of tents available on the market give this level of quality for only $143.58 info_outline

CONS

  1. Not roomy. With a floor area of 64 square feet, the Taurus 4 is smaller than quite a few of the 129 other 4 person tents we have looked at.
  2. Lacking in Headroom. With 12% less headroom than similar sized tents, one can see how this could be a negative thing for some people.
  3. Footprint not Included. There is no included footprint, there is one sold separately specifically for the Taurus 4 footprint Even though the floor may be made of 75D 185T poly taffeta, it is still better to protect it further with a footprint, especially on rough terrain.
  4. A tad heavy for backpacking. Even though the Taurus 4, looks like a small tent, it is not ideal for backpacking as it weighs 10 pounds. This is quite a lot more than many other backpacking tents
  5. Sloping walls. Even though Dome tents have lots of attributes to rave about. The sloping walls do tend to make it all the more smaller inside.
  6. Storage Space. because of the size of the tent, one cannot store a lot of stuff inside..

CONCLUSION

Value for money: In so much as value for your money, this tent is undoubtedly cheaper than the normal cost of all the one hundred and fifty, four-person tents we have looked at, this just by itself does not make it remarkable value for money. One should also take a look at other factors in-depth, as we do with each tent.

When we determine the score of a tent, we look at plenty of conditions, finding things where the tent could exceed other very similar tents and where it is coming up short.
