Summary: Favorable Reviews

Campers who used the tent said: Love that they used high-quality materials. It withstood against high wind conditions, which I did not expect. The entry is amazingly huge also, which makes getting in and out easy.

Summary: Unfavorable Reviews

People who bought the tent noted: It is not a good idea to bring it during freezing weather, especially during massive snow. Set up is not beginner-friendly, but I see no problem if you're already an expert.

The HiLight 2 has one window and one door and a peak center height of 3' 4, which is a little bit less than the average height of the 240 various 2 person tents we have studied. With 27 square feet of room inside, it is considerably smaller than some other 2-person tents, and it would be quite tight for you and, another camper throughout the 4-seasons, this tent is recommended for use in, smaller tents similar to this one generally make a really nice choice for campers that appreciate spending loads of hours outside of their tent exploring.

Many of the great points about dome tents are, that they are generally speaking light, making them easy to carry around. In most all instances, tents used for backpacking are of the dome type. They are generally speaking, freestanding and very straightforward to set up. In good weather, you could do without guy lines and stakes, not that this is recommended.

Dome tents are easily the most common of all the other types of tents you will see when camping. They tend to fair better in bad weather than other types, allowing water to roll off the sloped sides, unlike cabin tents that have flat tops, resulting in the rain pooling on the top. The simplest dome tent will have a square footprint, slanted sides a couple of poles which cross in the middle of the roof. Because of the way they are made, it is generally considered that they are best for up to a maximum of 6 campers.

Below you can check out an account of the tent's strongest and weakest points.

  1. Freestanding. The HiLight can support its own weight on any terrain. It does not need to be staked down in most cases. But in case of strong winds, it is always best to secure it to the floor with the included steel stakes and guylines.
  2. Vestibule. Having one vestibule. Offers you a place to store shoes and other items that can get dirty, muddy, this is a huge plus.
  3. Has Gear Loft. It is nice to see Black Diamond adding a gear loft in the interior to store some of your things.
  4. Available in other sizes. Black Diamond has also made this model available in Other Sizes.
  5. Low price. It is a great purchase for a 2 person dome tent that provides this much room. Not a lot of tents available on the market give this level of quality for only $499.95

  1. Not spacious. With a floor area of 27 square feet, the HiLight 2 is smaller than quite a lot of the 251 other 2 person tents we have looked at.
  2. Lacking in Headroom. With 9% less headroom than similar sized tents, one can see how this could be a negative factor for some people.
  3. Footprint not Included. There is no included footprint, there is one sold separately designed for the HiLight 2 footprint Even though the floor may be made of Silicone-coated nylon ripstop, it is still best to protect it further with a footprint, especially on rough terrain.
  4. Out of Stock. Unfortunately this particular tent is not currently in stock. It is still on the manufactures website the last time we checked.
  5. Not the best Ratings. Unfortunatly the HiLight 2 has some of the worst ratings of all tents on
  6. Sloping walls. Even though Dome tents have lots of things to rave about. The sloping sides do tend to make it all the more smaller inside.

Our Ratings: 3.3 STARS

Black Diamond's HiLight 2 tent is ideal for mountaineering and backpacking. Here are a couple of other nice points not already mentioned above which, were found and liked, while researching the model: Flow Manifold allows interior heat convection and exterior airflow, High tenacity 30D poly fabric improves strength and doesn’t stretch when wet and Complies to FR regulation CPAI-84.

With below par ratings, a few reviews and a minimum headroom of 3' and 27 square feet of space to play with, this tent is like your very own small studio. It will enable you to spend some real quality time camping. We found a decent amount of pros about the tent that you can study above.

If you came to this page looking for recommendations on this particular tent, our view is, it will make for an ok purchase. If you simply happened to arrive on this website while browsing for a brand new tent having never heard of this brand or this model before, it is probably a good idea to look at a few more comparable tents also.

Value for money: As far as value for money, this tent is cheaper than the average price of all the two hundred and fourty, two-person tents we have taken a look at, this just by itself does not make it good value for money. One should also take a look at other areas in detail, as we do for every tent.

When we calculate the score of a tent, we look at plenty of conditions, finding points where the tent could exceed other very similar tents and where it is coming up short. In this case, with an overall score of 3.3 and the price conclusions above, It is simple to recognize that with a price point of $499.95 The HiLight 2 is a decent deal and cheap when compared with comparable tents.

Its ratings show that the build and space the tent provides may have been slightly compromised to get a price tag significantly below the average price for comparable tents. It should make a decent choice for nearly all people searching for an adequate four-season backpacking tent to go camping in, that will serve you well.
