Tent Set Up

Green Thumbs Up Logo

Summary: Favorable Reviews

Campers mentioned: It has excellent construction with super ease of assembly. Especially nice in freezing weather. During the night, they had a storm with wind ( about 15m/s ) and snow, and the tent was held up well! The Marmot Fortress is an excellent 3-4 season tent and well suited for early spring, late fall, winter, and high elevation backpacking. One mentioned they had used this tent about six times now with no issues at all. It sets up easy, even in windy conditions. One camper went on a trip for many months, sleeping every day in the tent, and appreciated the big inner space inside the Fortress.

Summary: Unfavorable Reviews

Campers noted: The tent is a bit heavy, but for rough conditions, it is ok. Some people found it pretty challenging to get in/out of the tent, as it is more like a narrow vertical slit. Others noted that, as is often the case with tents, it would be very tight to sleep the full number of people the manufacture claims it accommodates.

SPECS AND CONFIGURATIONS

The Fortress 3 has two doors and a maximum center height of 3' 10, which is a tiny bit less than the average height of the 139 different 3 person tents we have examined With 41 square feet of space inside, it is considerably smaller than some other 3-person tents, and it would be quite cramped for you and, up to two other campers during the 4-seasons, this tent is approved for use in, smaller tents similar to this one are a nice choice for campers who enjoy spending lots of hours outside of the tent enjoying the fresh air.

A few of the fantastic things about dome tents are, that they are generally speaking not too heavy, making them easy to carry. In most all instances, tents used for backpacking are of the dome type. They are generally speaking, freestanding and very easy to set up. In calm weather, you could do without securing the tent with stakes and ropes, not that this is recommended.

Dome tents are the most common of all the other sorts of tents you will find when camping. They tend to fair better in the rain than other types, allowing water to easily slide off the slanted sides, unlike cabin tents that have flat roofs, allowing the water to pool on the top. The simplest dome tent should have a square floor, sloped sides a couple of poles which converge in the middle of the roof. Because of their construction, it is usually thought of that they are ideal for up to a maximum of 6 people.

PROS

  1. Freestanding. The Fortress can support its own weight on any terrain. It does not even have to be staked down in most cases. But in case of strong winds, it is always best to secure it to the ground with the included steel stakes and guylines.
  2. Vestibules. Having two vestibules. Affords you somewhere to store shoes and other items that can get dirty, muddy, this is a huge plus.
  3. Internal storage. It is nice to see Marmot has added a gear loft and pockets in the interior to store some of your things.
  4. More than one door. With 2 doors, it is simpler to get in and out of the tent, in the middle of the night if needed.
  5. Durable, water-resistant floor. The floor material is 68D 190T poly taffeta, which is a substantially thick and high-strength fabric. Meaning the base is not prone to rips and punctures. Also, the material has a 2000 mm waterproofing rating, which is pretty good for most circumstances.
  6. The rainfly completely covers the tent body. The rainfly covers the entire body of the tent from the top to the bottom and has a waterproof rating of 1500mm. Meaning it will easily protect you against heavy rain.
  7. Other sizes are available. Marmot has also made this model available in Other Sizes.
  8. Low price. It is a great purchase for a 3 person dome tent providing this much space. Not a lot of tents available on the market provide this level of quality for only $329.99

CONS

  1. Not roomy. With a floor area of 41 square feet, the Fortress 3 is smaller than quite a lot of the 139 other 3 person tents we have looked at.
  2. Lacking in Headroom. With 8% less headroom than similar sized tents, one can see how this could be a negative factor for some campers.
  3. Footprint not Included. There is no included footprint, The floor may be made of 68D 190T poly taffeta but it is still best to protect it further with a footprint, more so on rough terrain.
  4. Out of Stock. Unfortunately this particular tent is not currently in stock. It is still on the manufactures website the last time we checked.
  5. A little heavy for backpacking. Even though the Fortress 3, looks like a small tent, it is not probably the best choice for backpacking as it weighs 6 pounds. This is quite a lot more than many other backpacking tents
  6. Sloping walls. Even though Dome tents have many qualities to be positive about. The sloping walls do tend to make it all the more smaller inside.

CONCLUSION

4.7 Stars Logo

If you simply happened to arrive on this website while browsing for a new tent having not heard of this manufacurer or this tent model before, it is possibly a good thing to look at some more similar tents.

Value for money: In terms of value for money, this tent is a lot more competitive than the standard price of all the one hundred and ninety-three, three-person tents we have looked at, all alone this does not make it good value for money. We also need to look at other areas in-depth, as we do for every tent.

When we measure the ratings of a single tent, we examine a lot of areas, searching for things where the tent could outdo other comparable tents and where it is lacking. On this occasion, with a total rating of 4.7 and the price data above, It is simple enough to spot that with a cost of $329.99 Marmot's Fortress 3 is a very good deal and fabulously cheap in comparison with similar tents.
