MAIN POINTS OVERVIEW

The Coleman Evanston 6 Screened Tent is a spacious tent that’s ideal for family camping. It is a dome-type and includes a screened room that has different functions. You can use it as a lounging area, a storage area, and even extra space for sleeping. The inside of the tent has enough room to accommodate a family of four. It comes in an affordable price too – a big plus for novice campers and those just looking to have a first time outdoor adventure.

PROS

  1. Large Area. The Evanston 6 has 140 square feet of total floor area. If there are four people staying inside, there remains enough space for bags, clothes, packs, and other things that you may have brought along. The advertised capacity is 6 people, but that is when the screened area is also occupied. It’s best for 4 people, and offers a very generous space for couples. You can even fit a queen-sized bed inside.
  2. Extra Space in Screened Room. The screen room is a great place to set up foldable chairs for reading or simply lounging. It’s a way to enjoy the presence of nature while being bug-free. It’s also a nice space for putting in shoes, bags, and things you don’t want to keep inside the main tent.
  3. Cool Interior. The tent body is mostly constructed of mesh, which allows for easy airflow into the inside of the tent. Also, it has four large windows for extra cooling. Thus, the Evanston 6 works great for summer and clear-weather camping.
  4. Fairly Stable and Lightweight. The poles are fiberglass, which are not as durable as aluminum poles, but the dome structure is stable enough even in slightly windy areas. Also, the fiberglass poles make the tent lighter overall.
  5. Very Affordable. The Amazon-listed price is about $119.99 info_outline, making it very wallet-friendly for a 6-person tent.
  6. Bonus: An 8-person model. The Evanston also has a larger cousin able to house up to 8 people. It has nearly the same features (except for a bigger area), and costs just a little more

CONS

  1. Uncomfortable for 6 people. While the Evanston is rated as a 6-person tent, the space would be cramped for the most part if 6 people were inside. Some might think that the screen room would provide additional space, but sleeping there is not ideal.
  2. Screen Room Easily Gets Wet. Speaking of which, the screen room is not waterproof. The Evanston 6 does have a rainfly, but it does not cover the screen room. Thus, it can get completely soaked during rain. This is a major complaint from many Amazon customers who bought this tent. Adding to the problem is that the only entrance into the main tent is through the screen room. If the latter is already flooded, it would not make for a pleasant experience overall.
  3. Inadequate Rain Protection. The Evanston 6 is really only meant for camping during either summer or dry weather. Rainy environments will cause problems for the tent – mainly flooding and leaking. Even the main tent suffers from this – as a few Amazon reviews point out, the rainfly does not cover the tent body fully, so the side walls can still get wet. Since the tent body is made of mesh, the water will also leak into the interior.
  4. Poles Not Very Durable. Again, the poles are made of fiberglass – not the strongest tent pole material available. When the tent is kept to calm conditions, it’s all right. However, any sudden gust of wind may break the poles. On another note, if poles do hold up, there is another vulnerable point – the shock cords. These are meant to make attaching the pole segments easier, but some Amazon reviewers also say that the shock cords can easily snap. Without them, the pole segments will no longer attach securely.
  5. Lack of Pockets. Surprisingly, for a large tent, there are only two pockets to keep small valuables inside the tent. It would have been much nicer to have more pockets around the walls.
  6. Lack of Privacy. The Evanston 6’s rear window cannot be zipped up. Those wanting some extra privacy at night will not like this feature.
  7. Material Can Rip Easily. A number of Amazon customers have also complained that the tent fabric rips at the pole sleeves, the roof, and the screen room only after a few uses.
  8. No footprint. The Evanston 6 does not have an included footprint. You will have to buy one separately.

CONCLUSION

Four Stars Logo

The Coleman Evanston 6 is not designed to be a hardy, all-weather tent, but it is still useful for novice campers and those working on a tight budget. Just keep in mind to avoid campsites that are windy and rainy to maximize the benefits of the tent.

The Evanston 6 is a good choice for family campers as well as couples who like the extra space it provides. While it is advertised as a 6-person tent, it is best not to push it. Rather, 4 people would be the ideal maximum; this way, the tent remains comfortable for each person inside.

While it does have its flaws, the low price of $119.99 info_outline makes the Evanston 6 still an attractive choice for some people. So if you aren’t really a hardcore camper, or one that just does it occasionally, this tent may be for you.
