Summary: Favorable Reviews

I enjoyed using this tent. It does have a fantastic size and area for sleeping, and this is what I look for in a tent.

Summary: Unfavorable Reviews

The material used for the poles is not great. After using it, three adults will not easily fit in this tent. Maybe, if the three of you are small children, then it would not be a problem.

The Blacktail 3 has two doors and a peak center height of 3' 8 which is 11 inches less than the average height of the 126 different 3 person tents we have looked at. With 44 square feet of room inside, it is a tiny bit smaller than some other 3-person tents, and it could be a little cramped for you and, up to two other campers during the 3-seasons this tent is suggested for. Smaller tents similar to this one can make a very nice choice for people who welcome spending heaps of hours outside exploring the great outdoors.

A few of the cool points about dome tents are, that they are for, the most part not too heavy, making them easy to carry around. In nearly all cases, tents used for backpacking are of the dome type. They are generally speaking, freestanding and very straightforward to set up. In good weather, you can do without guy lines and stakes, not that this is suggested.

Dome tents are without a doubt the most commonly seen of all the various types of tents you will find when camping. They tend to fair better in the rain than other types, allowing water to roll off the sloped walls, unlike cabin tents that have flat roofs, resulting in the water pooling on the top. The most straightforward dome tent will have a rectangular footprint, slanted walls two or more poles which converge in the center of the roof. Because of their construction, it is typically considered that they are best suited for up to a maximum of 6 people.

Beneath you can browse an account of the tent's strongest and weakest points.

  1. Freestanding. The Blacktail can support its own weight on any terrain. It does not even have to be staked down in most cases. But in case of strong winds, it is always best to secure it to the ground with the included steel stakes and guylines.
  2. Vestibules. Having two vestibules. Gives you a place to store shoes and other things that can get dirty, muddy, this is a big plus.
  3. Internal storage. It is good to see Big Agnes has added a gear loft and pockets in the interior to store some of your things.
  4. More than one door. With 2 doors, it is easier to get in and out of the tent, in the middle of the night if needed.
  5. Includes FootPrint. It is not often we see a footprint included with the tent. It is strongly suggested to always use a footprint, so not having to buy one is a plus.
  6. Breathable. The Blacktail's interior uses a mesh fabric on the inside of the tent, and this helps maximize the flow of air. With the extra ventilation, and this tent is great for use in the warmer months.
  7. The rainfly completely covers the tent body. The rainfly covers the whole body of the tent from the top to the bottom and has a waterproof rating of 1500mm. Meaning it will easily protect you against heavy rain.
  8. Available in other sizes. Big Agnes has also made this model available in Other Sizes.
  9. Low price. It is a great buy for a 3 person dome tent that provides this much space. Not many tents available on the market provide this level of quality for only $199.95 info_outline

  1. Not roomy. With a floor area of 44 square feet, the Blacktail 3 is smaller than quite a few of the 126 other 3 person tents we have looked at.
  2. Lacking in Headroom. With 11% less headroom than similar sized tents, one can see how this could be a negative thing for some campers.
  3. Sloping walls. Even though Dome tents have many things to rave about. The sloping sides do tend to make it all the more smaller inside.

Our Ratings: 4.1 STARS

Big Agnes's Blacktail 3 tent is good for backpacking. There are a few other points not mentioned above which, we noticed and liked, while researching the model: 4 interior mesh pockets, 2 media pockets, Velcro tabs connect fly to pole structure providing perfect pitch and extra stability and Reflective guylines and webbing on tent corners.

With good ratings, a few reviews and a peak height of 3' and 44 square feet of space for sleeping, this tent is like your very own miniature flat. This allows you to spend some really enjoyable moments exploring the great outdoors. We found a decent amount of pros about the tent that you can study above.

If you found this website looking for an endorsement about this specific tent, our view is, it will make for a good buy. If you simply happened to arrive on this website while looking for a brand new tent having not heard of this manufacture or this model previously, it is probably a good thing to look at a few more comparable tents also.

Value for money: In terms of value for money, this tent is a cheaper than the usual price of all the one hundred and eighty, three-person tents we have studied, this itself does not make it good value for money. We also need to look at other factors in detail, as we do with each tent.

When we measure the score of an individual tent, we scrutinize a good deal of conditions, searching for points where the tent could exceed other very similar tents and where it is coming up short. In this case, with a total rating of 4.1 and the price data above, we can view that with a cost of $199.95 info_outline The Blacktail 3 is a very good deal and fabulously competitively priced in comparison with similar tents.

The overall score shows that the quality and dimensions the tent offers were not compromised to get a price tag significantly below the average price for similar tents. It should make a remarkable choice for nearly all campers searching for an adequate three-season backpacking tent to camp in, that will serve you well for years to come.
