Summary: Favorable Reviews

Excellent quality of materials used. No doubt Big Agnes put a lot of effort into this. Thumbs up to the creators.

Teal Thumbs Down Logo

Summary: Unfavorable Reviews

It is not a tent for strong wind and heavy rain. The poles may break if you are not careful. Other than that, it is all good.

SPECS AND CONFIGURATIONS

The Blacktail 2 has two doors and a peak center height of 3' 6 which is a tiny bit less than the average height of the 189 different 2 person tents we have studied. With 29 square feet of space inside, it is significantly smaller than some other 2-person tents, and it would be quite cramped for you and, another camper throughout the 3-seasons this tent is approved for. Smaller tents like this one can generally make a really good choice for campers who like spending loads of time outside exploring the great outdoors.

Many of the cool things about dome tents are, that they are under normal circumstances not too heavy, making them easy to carry. In nearly all instances, tents used for backpacking are of the dome type. They are usually, freestanding and very straightforward to set up. In good weather, you could do without securing the tent with stakes and ropes, not that this is recommended.

Dome tents are easily the most common of all the different types of tents you will see when camping. They tend to do better in bad weather than other types, allowing water to roll off the sloped walls, unlike cabin tents that have flat tops, resulting in the water pooling on the top of the tent. The most basic dome tent should have a square floor, slanted sides two or more poles which cross in the center of the roof. Due to their construction, it is usually considered that they are ideal for up to a maximum of 6 campers.

Underneath you can find a list of the tent's strongest and weakest points.

PROS

  1. Freestanding. The Blacktail can support its own weight on any terrain. It does not even have to be staked down in most cases. But in case of strong winds, it is always best to secure it to the floor with the included steel stakes and guylines.
  2. Vestibules. Having two vestibules. Offers you somewhere to store shoes and other things that can get dirty, muddy, this is a huge plus.
  3. Internal storage. It is good to see Big Agnes has added a gear loft and pockets in the interior to store some of your things.
  4. More than one door. With 2 doors, it is simpler to get in and out of the tent, in the middle of the night if needed.
  5. Includes FootPrint. It is not often we see a footprint included with the tent. It is suggested to always use a footprint, so not having to pay extra for one is a bonus.
  6. Breathable. The Blacktail's interior uses a mesh fabric on the inside of the tent, and this helps maximize the flow of air. With the extra ventilation, and this tent is great for use in the warmer months.
  7. The rainfly completely covers the tent body. The rainfly covers the whole body of the tent from the top to the bottom and has a waterproof rating of 1500mm. Meaning it will easily protect you against heavy rain.
  8. Available in other sizes. Big Agnes has also made this model available in Other Sizes.
  9. Low price. It is a great deal for a 2 person dome tent that provides this much space. Not many tents available on the market give this level of quality for only $164.95 info_outline

CONS

  1. Not roomy. With a floor area of 29 square feet, the Blacktail 2 is smaller than quite a lot of the 189 other 2 person tents we have looked at.
  2. Lacking in Headroom. With 10% less headroom than similar sized tents, one can see how this could be a negative thing for some campers.
  3. Sloping walls. Even though Dome tents have heaps of qualities to rave about. The sloping walls do tend to make it all the more smaller inside.

CONCLUSION

In case you just happened to land on this page while browsing for a brand new tent having not heard of this brand or this tent model before, it is probably a good thing to check out some more comparable tents also.

Value for money: When contemplating value for your dollar, this tent is a lot more competitive than the average price of all the two hundred and sixty-eight, two-person tents we have studied, this alone by itself does not make it excellent value for money. One should also think about other areas in-depth, as we do with every tent.

When we calculate the valuation of an individual tent, we study loads of things, looking for areas where the tent could exceed other very similar tents and where it is coming up short. In this case, with a total score of 4.1 and the price knowledge above, one can observe that with a ticket price of $164.95 info_outline Big Agnes's Blacktail 2 is a fair bargain and astonishingly cheap in comparison with comparable tents.

Its overall score shows that the quality and size the tent offers were not skimped on to finish up with a price tag significantly under the average price for similar tents. It could make a superb choice for most campers looking for a comfy three-season backpacking tent to camp in, that should serve you well for years to come.
