Summary: Favorable Reviews

Super easy to set up, solid materials used, and lightweight. I also think the design is attractive and straightforward.

Teal Thumbs Down Logo

Summary: Unfavorable Reviews

I'm a bit disappointed with the poles. The materials used look and feel cheap. The thickness of the floor is not the way I expected it to be.

SPECS AND CONFIGURATIONS

The Blacktail 4 has two doors and a peak center height of 4' 7, which is a tiny bit smaller than the average height of the 134 different 4 person tents we have studied. With 66 square feet of room inside, it is a tiny bit larger than some other 4-person tents, and it should accommodate you and, up to three other campers during the whole of the 3-seasons, this tent is recommended for use in, smaller tents like this one can make an excellent choice for campers who love spending loads of hours outside exploring the great outdoors.

Some of the fantastic things about dome tents are, that they are under normal circumstances not too heavy, making them simple to carry around. In most all cases, tents used for backpacking are of the dome type. They are generally speaking, freestanding and very straightforward to set up. In good weather, you can do without securing the tent with stakes and ropes, not that this is recommended.

Dome tents are the most common of all the various sorts of tents you will find when camping. They tend to do better in bad weather than other types, allowing rain to roll off the slanted walls, unlike cabin tents that have flat tops, resulting in the rain pooling on the roof. The most straightforward dome tent should have a rectangular footprint, slanted sides two or more poles which converge in the middle of the roof. Because of the way they are made, it is usually considered that they are ideal for up to a maximum of 6 people.

Beneath you can find a list of the tent's pros and cons.

PROS

  1. Freestanding. The Blacktail can support its own weight on any terrain. It does not need to be staked down in most cases. But in case of strong winds, it is always best to secure it to the ground with the included steel stakes and guylines.
  2. Vestibules. Having two vestibules. Offers you somewhere to store shoes and other things that can get dirty, muddy, this is a huge plus.
  3. Internal storage. It is good to see Big Agnes has added a gear loft and pockets in the interior to store some of your things.
  4. More than one door. With 2 doors, it is easier to get in and out of the tent, in the middle of the night if needed.
  5. Includes FootPrint. It is not often we see a footprint included with the tent. It is strongly suggested to always use a footprint, so not having to pay extra for one is a bonus.
  6. Breathable. The Blacktail's interior uses a mesh fabric on the inside of the tent, and this helps maximize the flow of air. With the extra ventilation, and this tent is great for use in the warmer months.
  7. The rainfly completely covers the tent body. The rainfly covers the whole body of the tent from the top to the bottom and has a waterproof rating of 1500mm. Meaning it will easily protect you against heavy rain.
  8. Available in other sizes. Big Agnes has also made this model available in Other Sizes.
  9. Low price. It is a great buy for a 4 person dome tent that provides this much space. Not many tents available on the market give this level of quality for only $329.95 info_outline

CONS

  1. Lacking in Headroom. With 9% less headroom than similar sized tents, one can see how this could be a negative thing for some people.
  2. No windows. With no windows it is not simple to keep the tent cool on a hot summers night.
  3. A tad heavy for backpacking. Even though the Blacktail 4, looks like a small tent, it is not probably the best choice for backpacking as it weighs 8 pounds. This is quite a lot more than many other backpacking tents
  4. Sloping walls. Even though Dome tents have lots of attributes to be positive about. The sloping walls do tend to make it all the more smaller inside.

CONCLUSION

4.1 Stars Logo

Our Ratings: 4.1 STARS

Big Agnes's Blacktail 4 tent is perfect for bicycle & motorbike camping. There are a few other cool things not already mentioned above which, were noticed and liked, while researching the model: 4 interior mesh pockets, 2 media pockets, Velcro tabs connect fly to pole structure providing perfect pitch and extra stability and Reflective guylines and webbing on tent corners.

With great ratings, a few reviews and a minimum headroom of 4' and 66 square feet of area to sleep, this tent is like your own modest flat. This will enable you and up to 3 other people to share some really enjoyable moments exploring the great outdoors. We found a decent amount of pros about the tent that you can study above.

If you came to this website looking for recommendations about this particular tent, we think, it would make for a great buy. If you simply happened to land on this page while browsing for a new tent having never heard of this brand or this model previously, it is possibly a good thing to check out a few other similar tents also.

Value for money: When considering value for your money, this tent is a lot more competitive than the standard cost of all the one hundred and fifty-four, four-person tents we have taken a look at, this alone does not make it remarkable value for money. We also need to think about other things in detail, as we do with every tent.

When we determine the score of a single tent, we consider loads of stuff, searching for areas where the tent could outperform other very similar tents and where it is not quite as good. In this case, with a total rating of 4.2 and the price knowledge above, It is simple enough to observe that with a ticket price of $329.95 info_outline Big Agnes's Blacktail 4 is a very good bargain and astonishingly cheap in comparison with comparable tents.

The overall score shows that the build and space the tent gives you were not compromised to arrive at a price unquestionably below the average price for similar tents. It is also worth noting it is marked down by 0% from the manufactures suggested retail price. It should make a fantastic choice for nearly all people searching for a comfortable three-season dome tent to go camping with, that should serve you well for years to come.
