Summary: Favorable Reviews

Excellent lightweight tent. There's plenty of room for me, my girlfriend and her gear. It is so easy to set up. I am very happy to spend a little more for the quality and the weight.

Summary: Unfavorable Reviews

My biggest complaint is with the rain fly. I had a very hard time attaching the rain fly so it fits. I also think the tent's perfect for 1 person. There's really not much room left for 2 persons.

The FreeLite 2 has two doors and a maximum center height of 3' 0, which is 14 inches smaller than the average height of the 222 various 2 person tents we have examined With 29 square feet of room inside, it is significantly smaller than some other 2-person tents, and it would be quite cramped for you and, another camper during the whole of the 3-seasons, this tent is approved for use in, smaller tents like this one often make a really good choice for campers who welcome spending heaps of hours outside exploring the great outdoors.

Many of the great points about dome tents are, that they are generally speaking not too heavy, making them simple to carry around. In near all instances, tents used for backpacking are of the dome type. They are usually, freestanding and very easy to set up. In good weather, you can do without securing the tent with stakes and ropes, not that this is recommended.

Dome tents are easily the most commonly seen of all the different sorts of tents you will see when camping. They tend to fair better in bad weather than other types, allowing rain to roll off the slanted walls, unlike cabin tents that have flat tops, resulting in the rain pooling on the top. The most basic dome tent will have a rectangular floor, slanted walls a couple of poles which converge in the middle of the roof. Due to their construction, it is generally thought of that they are ideal for up to a maximum of 6 campers.

Down below, you can check out an account of the tent's pros and cons.

  1. Vestibule. Having one vestibule. Gives you a place to store shoes and other items that can get dirty, muddy, this is a big plus.
  2. Internal storage. It is nice to see MSR has added a gear loft and pockets in the interior to store some of your gear.
  3. More than one door. With 2 doors, it is simpler to get in and out of the tent, in the middle of the night if needed.
  4. Breathable. The FreeLite's interior uses a mesh fabric on the inside of the tent, and this helps maximize the flow of air. With the extra ventilation, and this tent is great for use in the warmer months.
  5. The rainfly completely covers the tent body. The rainfly covers the whole body of the tent from the top to the bottom and has a waterproof rating of 1200mm. Meaning it will easily protect you against heavy rain.
  6. Other sizes are available. MSR has also made this model available in Other Sizes.

  1. Not roomy. With a floor area of 29 square feet, the FreeLite 2 is smaller than quite a few of the 222 other 2 person tents we have looked at.
  2. Lacking in Headroom. With 14% less headroom than similar sized tents, one can see how this could be a negative factor for some campers.
  3. Footprint not Included. There is no included footprint, there is one sold separately designed for the FreeLite 2 footprint Even though the floor may be made of 15D ripstop nylon Xtreme Shield polyurethane & silicone, it is still best to protect it further with a footprint, especially on rough terrain.
  4. Sloping walls. Even though Dome tents have many qualities to be positive about. The sloping walls do tend to make it all the more smaller inside.

Our Ratings: 4.4 STARS

MSR's FreeLite 2 tent is really good for backpacking. Here are a couple of other things not noted above which, we found and liked, while reviewing the model: MSR’s lightest semi-freestanding, double-wall tent provides full protection without a big weight penalty, the ventilating micromesh canopy and waterproof rainfly offer protection for all kinds of weather and Large door offers access to spacious interior for comfort and convenience on longer backcountry trips.

With positive ratings, a couple of reviews and headroom of 3' and 29 square feet of space to play with, this tent is like your very own miniature studio. It allows you to spend some real quality moments in the outdoors. We found a decent amount of positive points about the tent that you can check out above.

If you found this page looking for recommendations about this specific tent, we consider, it will make for an excellent purchase. In case you just happened to arrive on this page while looking for a new tent having never heard of this brand or this model previously, it is perhaps a good thing to check out a few more similar tents.

Value for money: When thinking about value for your dollar, this tent is tiny bit cheaper than the normal price of all the two hundred and eighty-seven, two-person tents we have studied, this just by itself does not make it good value for money. We also need to take a look at other areas in detail, as we do for each tent.

When we tally up the ratings of a single tent, we consider loads of stuff, looking for things where the tent could perform well against other similar tents and where it is coming up short. In this case, with a total score of 4.4 and the price conclusions above, we can see that with a cost of $489.95 MSR's FreeLite 2 is a good deal and cheap in comparison with similar tents.

Its overall score shows that the build and dimensions the tent gives you were not compromised to finish up with a price tag well beneath the normal price for comparable tents. It is also worth noting it is discounted by 0% from the manufactures MSRP. It should make a very good choice for most campers searching for an appropriate three-season backpacking tent to go camping with, that will serve you well for years to come.
