Summary: Favorable Reviews

Extremely pleased with its quality. Love how Alps include a vestibule for this one which other tents around the same price do not have. Super light, roomy for a two-person tent, and perfect for hiking trips.

Summary: Unfavorable Reviews

Good for two adults. However, it might be tight if you are with someone who is 6 feet and up. Reading the instructions before setting it up would be great. You might get confused if you won't read the instructions in advance before using it.

SPECS AND CONFIGURATIONS

The Hydrus 2 has one door and a maximum center height of 3' 8 which is a little bit less than the average height of the 189 other 2 person tents we have studied. With 33 square feet of room inside, it is a little bit smaller than some other 2-person tents, and it could be a little tight for you and, another camper all through the 3-seasons this tent is recommended for. Smaller tents like this one make an ideal choice for people who love spending lots of hours outside exploring the great outdoors.

Many of the fantastic things about dome tents are, that they are under normal circumstances light, making them easy to carry around. In most all instances, tents used for backpacking are of the dome type. They are generally speaking, freestanding and very easy to set up. In good weather, you could do without guy lines and stakes, not that this is recommended.

Dome tents are the most common of all the other types of tents you will see when camping. They tend to do better in storms than other types, allowing rain to easily slide off the slanted sides, unlike cabin tents that have flat roofs, resulting in the rain pooling on the top of the tent. The most straightforward dome tent will have a square floor, slanted walls a couple of poles which cross in the center of the roof. Due to the way they are made, it is usually considered that they are best for up to a maximum of 6 people.

Below you can browse an account of the tent's strongest and weakest points.

PROS

  1. Freestanding. The Hydrus can support its own weight on any terrain. It does not even have to be staked down in most cases. But in case of strong winds, it is always best to secure it to the ground with the included steel stakes and guylines.
  2. Vestibule. Having one vestibule. Gives you somewhere to store shoes and other items that can get dirty, muddy, this is a huge plus.
  3. Internal storage. It is nice to see Alps has added a gear loft and pockets in the interior to store some of your stuff.
  4. Durable, water-resistant floor. The floor material is 75D 185T poly taffeta, which is a substantially thick and high-strength fabric. Meaning the base is not prone to tears and punctures. Also, the material has a 3000 mm waterproofing rating, which is pretty good for most circumstances.
  5. Breathable. The Hydrus's interior uses a mesh fabric on the inside of the tent, and this helps maximize the flow of air. With the extra ventilation, and this tent is great for use in the summer.
  6. The rainfly completely covers the tent body. The rainfly covers the whole body of the tent from the top to the bottom and has a waterproof rating of 1500mm. Meaning it will easily protect you against heavy rain.
  7. Great Ratings The Hydrus 2 has some of the best ratings of all the tents on optimumtents.com
  8. Available in other sizes. Alps has also made this model available in Other Sizes.
  9. Low price. It is a great buy for a 2 person dome tent that provides this much space. Not a lot of tents available on the market give this level of quality for only $219.99 info_outline

CONS

  1. Not roomy. With a floor area of 33 square feet, the Hydrus 2 is smaller than quite a lot of the 189 other 2 person tents we have looked at.
  2. Lacking in Headroom. With 7% less headroom than similar sized tents, one can see how this could be a negative thing for some people.
  3. Footprint not Included. There is no included footprint, there is one available separately specifically for the Hydrus 2 footprint Even though the floor may be made of 75D 185T poly taffeta, it is still best to protect it further with a footprint, especially on rough terrain.
  4. Out of Stock. Unfortunately this particular tent is not currently in stock. It is still on the manufactures website the last time we checked.
  5. Sloping walls. Even though Dome tents have lots of attributes to be positive about. The sloping sides do tend to make it all the more smaller inside.
  6. Storage Space. because of the size of the tent, one cannot store a lot of gear inside..

CONCLUSION

Value for money: In terms of value for your dollar, this tent is a lot more competitive than the standard cost of all the two hundred and sixty-eight, two-person tents we have taken a look at, this alone by itself does not make it good value for money.
