Summary: Favorable Reviews

Extremely pleased with its quality. Love how Alps include a vestibule for this one which other tents around the same price do not have. Super light, roomy for a two-person tent, and perfect for hiking trips.

Teal Thumbs Down Logo

Summary: Unfavorable Reviews

Good for two adults. However, it might be tight if you are with someone who is 6 feet and up. Reading the instructions before setting it up would be great. You might get confused if you won't read the instructions in advance before using it.

SPECS AND CONFIGURATIONS

The Hydrus 2 has one door and a peak center height of 3' 8, which is a little bit less than the average height of the 204 other 2 person tents we have studied. With 33 square feet of space inside, it is a little bit smaller than some other 2-person tents, and it could be a little cramped for you and, another camper during the whole of the 3-seasons, this tent is recommended for use in, smaller tents like this one generally make a superb choice for campers who love spending loads of time outside their tent getting some air.

Many of the great things about dome tents are, that they are generally speaking not too heavy, making them simple to carry. In most all instances, tents used for backpacking are of the dome type. They are usually, freestanding and very easy to set up. In good weather, you could do without securing the tent with stakes and ropes, not that this is recommended.

Dome tents are without a doubt the most commonly seen of all the other types of tents you will see when camping. They tend to do better in the rain than other types, allowing water to roll off the slanted sides, unlike cabin tents that have flat roofs, allowing the water to pool on the top of the tent. The most basic dome tent will have a square floor, slanted sides a couple of poles which converge in the middle of the roof. Because of their construction, it is generally considered that they are best for up to a maximum of 6 campers.

Beneath you can see a list of the tent's strongest and weakest points.

PROS

  1. Freestanding. The Hydrus can support its own weight on any terrain. It does not even have to be staked down in most cases. But in case of strong winds, it is always best to secure it to the floor with the included steel stakes and guylines.
  2. Vestibule. Having one vestibule. Gives you a place to store shoes and other items that can get dirty, muddy, this is a big plus.
  3. Internal storage. It is nice to see Alps Mountaineering has added a gear loft and pockets in the interior to store some of your gear.
  4. Durable, water-resistant floor. The floor material is 75D 185T poly taffeta, which is a substantially thick and high-strength fabric. Meaning the base is not prone to tears and punctures. Also, the material has a 3000 mm waterproofing rating, which is pretty good for most circumstances.
  5. Breathable. The Hydrus's interior uses a mesh fabric on the inside of the tent, and this helps maximize the flow of air. With the extra ventilation, and this tent is great for use in the warmer months.
  6. The rainfly completely covers the tent body. The rainfly covers the whole body of the tent from the top to the bottom and has a waterproof rating of 1500mm. Meaning it will easily protect you against heavy downpours.
  7. Available in other sizes. Alps Mountaineering has also made this model available in Other Sizes.
  8. Low price. It is a great deal for a 2 person dome tent that provides this much room. Not a lot of tents available on the market give this level of quality for only $219.99

CONS

  1. Not roomy. With a floor area of 33 square feet, the Hydrus 2 is smaller than quite a few of the 204 other 2 person tents we have looked at.
  2. Lacking in Headroom. With 7% less headroom than similar sized tents, one can see how this could be a negative thing for some people.
  3. Footprint not Included. There is no included footprint, there is one available separately designed for the Hydrus 2 footprint Even though the floor may be made of 75D 185T poly taffeta, it is still better to protect it further with a footprint, especially on rough terrain.
  4. Out of Stock. Unfortunately this particular tent is not currently in stock. It is still on the manufactures site the last time we checked.
  5. Sloping walls. Even though Dome tents have lots of things to be positive about. The sloping walls do tend to make it all the more smaller inside.

CONCLUSION

4.3 Stars Logo

Our Ratings: 4.3 STARS

Alps Mountaineering's Hydrus 2 tent is good for backpacking. There are a couple of other nice points not noted above which, we found and liked, while researching the model: Vestibule pole allows for maximum usable space, creating an expansive storage area and easy entry/exi, Weatherproof fly buckles on for maximum adjustability and protection and Pocket placement designed for user(s) to sleep with head at the door or the rear of the tent.

With good ratings, a decent amount of reviews and headroom of 3' and 33 square feet of space for sleeping, this tent is like your own small home away from home. It enables you to spend some really enjoyable moments camping. We found a decent amount of positive points about the tent that you can check out above.

If you found this website looking for recommendations about this particular tent, our view is, it will make for a great acquisition. In case you just happened to arrive on this website while browsing for a brand new tent having never heard of this brand or this model before, it is perhaps a good thing to check out some more similar tents.

Value for money: When thinking about value for your dollar, this tent is a cheaper than the average price of all the two hundred and eighty-five, two-person tents we have looked at, all alone this does not make it awesome value for money. One should also take into account other areas in detail, as we do for each tent.

When we calculate the score of a single tent, we look at plenty of things, looking for areas where the tent could beat other very similar tents and where it is lacking. On this occasion, with a total rating of 4.3 and the price info above, we can view that with a ticket price of $219.99 Alps Mountaineering's Hydrus 2 is a great bargain and incredibly competitively priced when compared with comparable tents.

Its ratings show that the quality and space the tent offers were not compromised to obtain a price unquestionably below the average price for similar tents. It could make an excellent choice for nearly all people looking for an appropriate three-season backpacking tent to go camping in, that should serve you well for years to come.
