Summary: Favorable Reviews

The Hydrus 1 is easy to assemble. Love the ability to fold and unfold the flap from the inside the tent. It is very practical, especially for star viewing.

Summary: Unfavorable Reviews

It does not have all the things that I needed for a tent. However, for its price, it's still a good catch. For a simple camping event, this one would be okay and survive you for a night.

SPECS AND CONFIGURATIONS

The Hydrus 1 has one door and a peak center height of 3' 5 which is a little bit less than the average height of the 60 different 1 person tents we have studied. With 22 square feet of space inside, it is significantly smaller than some other 1-person tents, and it would be quite cramped for you during the whole of the 3-seasons this tent is suggested for. Smaller tents like this one make a really nice choice for campers who enjoy spending heaps of time outside the tent exploring.

A few of the cool points about dome tents are, that they are for, the most part not too heavy, making them simple to carry. In nearly all instances, tents used for backpacking are of the dome type. They are usually, freestanding and very simple to set up. In calm weather, you could do without guy lines and stakes, not that this is suggested.

Dome tents are without a doubt the most common of all the different types of tents you will see when camping. They tend to fair better in the rain than other types, allowing rain to roll off the slanted walls, unlike cabin tents that have flat tops, allowing the water to pool on the top of the tent. The most basic dome tent will have a rectangular footprint, sloped sides two or more poles which converge in the center of the roof. Due to the way they are made, it is generally considered that they are best suited for up to a maximum of 6 people.

Below you can check out a list of the tent's strongest and weakest points.

PROS

  1. Freestanding. The Hydrus can support its own weight on any terrain. It does not even have to be staked down in most cases. But in case of strong winds, it is always best to secure it to the floor with the included steel stakes and guylines.
  2. Vestibule. Having one vestibule. Affords you a place to store shoes and other things that can get dirty, muddy, this is a huge plus.
  3. Internal storage. It is nice to see Alps has added a gear loft and pockets in the interior to store some of your gear.
  4. Durable, water-resistant floor. The floor material is 75D 185T poly taffeta, which is a substantially thick and high-strength fabric. Meaning the base is not prone to rips and punctures. Also, the material has a 3000 mm waterproofing rating, which is very good for most circumstances.
  5. Breathable. The Hydrus's interior uses a mesh fabric on the inside of the tent, and this helps maximize the flow of air. With the extra ventilation, and this tent is great for use in the warmer months.
  6. The rainfly completely covers the tent body. The rainfly covers the whole body of the tent from the top to the bottom and has a waterproof rating of 1500mm. Meaning it will easily protect you against heavy rain.
  7. Other sizes are available. Alps has also made this model available in Other Sizes.
  8. Low price. It is a great deal for a 1 person dome tent that provides this much space. Not a lot of tents available on the market give this level of quality for only $69.99 info_outline

CONS

  1. Not spacious. With a floor area of 22 square feet, the Hydrus 1 is smaller than quite a few of the 60 other 1 person tents we have looked at.
  2. Footprint not Included. There is no included footprint, there is one sold separately specifically for the Hydrus 1 footprint Even though the floor may be made of 75D 185T poly taffeta, it is still best to protect it further with a footprint, especially on rough terrain.
  3. Out of Stock. Unfortunately this particular tent is not currently in stock. It is still on the manufactures site the last time we checked.
  4. Unfavorable Ratings. Unfortunatly the Hydrus 1 has some of the worst ratings of all tents on optimumtents.com
  5. Sloping walls. Even though Dome tents have many attributes to rave about. The sloping sides do tend to make it all the more smaller inside.
  6. Storage Space. because of the size of the tent, one cannot store a lot of stuff inside..

CONCLUSION

4.3 Stars Logo

Our Ratings: 4.3 STARS

Alps's Hydrus 1 tent is good for backpacking. There are a couple of other nice points not already mentioned above which, we found and liked, while researching the model: Vestibule pole allows for maximum usable space, creating an expansive storage area and easy entry/exi, Weatherproof fly buckles on for maximum adjustability and protection and Pocket placement designed for user(s) to sleep with head at the door or the rear of the tent.

With below average ratings, a couple of reviews and headroom of 3' and 22 square feet of space to enjoy, this tent is like your own little studio. This allows you to spend some really enjoyable time exploring the great outdoors. We found a decent amount of pros about the tent that you can look at above.

If you found this website looking for an endorsement on this specific tent, we consider, it should make for an ok buy. If you simply happened to arrive on this website while looking for a brand new tent having not heard of this manufacture or this tent model previously, it is possibly a good thing to check out a few more comparable tents also.

Value for money: As far as value for your money, this tent is cheaper than the usual cost of all the ninety-eight, one-person tents we have taken a look at, all alone this does not make it good value for money. We also need to take into account other factors in-depth, as we do for each tent.

When we calculate the ratings of an individual tent, we study a lot of data points, finding things where the tent could outdo other very similar tents and where it is not quite as good. On this occasion, with an overall score of 4.3 and the price knowledge above, It is simple to notice that with a price of $69.99 info_outline The Hydrus 1 is an ok buy and cheap when compared with comparable tents.

The ratings show that the build and capacity the tent offers could possibly have been on a small scale skimped on to obtain a price undoubtedly beneath the average price for comparable tents. It should make a good choice for nearly all people looking for an adequate three-season backpacking tent to go camping in, that should serve you well.
