Summary: Favorable Reviews

Some of the campers said: This is made for extreme weather conditions. It made me feel warm during those cold winter trips. Since it is a free standing tent, you can also put it anywhere you want either in rocky or frozen ground. Materials are quality built and really proved its worth.

Summary: Unfavorable Reviews

Some people who used the tent said: Setting this up with one person only would be a little tricky. It must be at least 2 people if you want to get the job done fast. Ventilation also needs some improvement. It is good during winter, but in summer, you need to open some windows or doors to let the airflow inside.

SPECS AND CONFIGURATIONS

The HUB High-Altitude 8 Utility Base Camp is MSR's largest tent, and it has three windows and two doors and a peak center height of 6' 7, which is a tiny bit smaller than the average height of the 55 different 8 person tents we have examined With 108 square feet of space inside, it is considerably smaller than some other 8-person tents, and it would be quite cramped for you and, up to seven other campers during the whole of the 4-seasons, this tent is approved for use in, larger tents similar to this one make a really nice choice for campers that enjoy having lots of space inside of their tent.

Some of the cool things about dome tents are, that they are generally speaking lightweight, making them simple to carry around. In most all cases, tents used for backpacking are of the dome type. They are generally speaking, freestanding and very easy to set up. In calm weather, you can do without securing the tent with stakes and ropes, not that this is suggested.

Dome tents are the most common of all the other types of tents you will find when camping. They tend to do better in bad weather than other types, allowing water to roll off the slanted sides, unlike cabin tents that have flat tops, resulting in the rain pooling on the top. The most straightforward dome tent will have a square floor, sloped walls two or more poles which cross in the center of the roof. Due to their construction, it is generally thought of that they are best for up to a maximum of 6 people.

Beneath you can check out an account of the tent's strongest and weakest points.

PROS

  1. Freestanding. The HUB High-Altitude Utility Base Camp can support its own weight on any terrain. It does not even have to be staked down in most cases. But in case of strong winds, it is always best to secure it to the ground with the included steel stakes and guylines.
  2. Has Gear Loft. It is good to see MSR adding a gear loft in the interior to store some of your things.
  3. Has awnings. The awnings protect the walls of the tent.
  4. More than one door. With 2 doors, it is easier to get in and out of the tent, in the middle of the night if needed.
  5. More than one window. With 3 windows it is easier to keep the tent ventilated on a hot summers night.
  6. Durable, water-resistant floor. The floor material is 70 taffeta nylon Durashield polyurethane & DWR, which is a substantially thick and high-strength fabric. Meaning the base is not prone to tears and punctures. Also, the material has a 10000 mm waterproofing rating, which is very good for most circumstances.
  7. The rainfly completely covers the tent body. The rainfly covers the entire body of the tent from the top to the bottom and has a waterproof rating of 3000mm. Meaning it will easily protect you against heavy downpours.

CONS

  1. Sensitive to wind. Because of its size and shape, the HUB High-Altitude may not do best in strong winds if it is not firmly secured with the provided guy lines and stakes. Even though the tent is listed as freestanding in all but very calm conditions, one would want to stake and tie it down correctly.
  2. Not spacious. With a floor area of 108 square feet, the HUB High-Altitude 8 is smaller than quite a lot of the 57 other 8 person tents we have looked at.
  3. Lacking in Headroom. With 6% less headroom than similar sized tents, one can see how this could be a negative factor for some campers.
  4. Only one room. The HUB High-Altitude is designed for 8 people, some other tents of a similar size have more than one room allowing for a little more privacy.
  5. No Vestibules. If you want to keep your dirty shoes, clothes, and backpacks protected from the rain etc, you must keep them inside the tent.
  6. Heavy. Even though heavy is not in it self a negative, it is worth noting that the HUB High-Altitude 8, weighs 49 pounds and has a packed size of 18 x 30 inches. obviously it is designed for camping with a vehicle and would not be super simple to set up on your own.
  7. Footprint not Included. There is no included footprint, The floor may be made of 70 taffeta nylon Durashield polyurethane & DWR but it is still best to protect it further with a footprint, especially on rough terrain.
  8. Sloping walls. Even though Dome tents have lots of attributes to rave about. The sloping walls do tend to make it all the more smaller inside.

CONCLUSION

4.5 Stars Logo

Our Ratings: 4.5 STARS

Here are a few other nice points not noted above which, we found and liked, while reviewing the model: Removable door panels allow for flexible ventilation and protection, Proven and trusted by professional mountaineers in the Himalayas, Antarctica and other extreme environments. and The 2-meter high ceiling creates a spacious cabin for standing and moving about. .

With fantastic ratings, and a peak height of 6' and 108 square feet of space to enjoy, this tent is like your own small residence. It allows you and up to 6 other campers to spend some really enjoyable time in the outdoors together. We found a decent amount of pros about the tent that you can check out above.

If you came to this page looking for suggestions on this actual tent, we think, it will make for a very good acquisition. If you just happened to arrive on this website while browsing for a new tent having not heard of this manufacture or this tent model previously, it is possibly a good thing to look at some other similar tents.

Value for money: When thinking about value for your money, this tent is significantly more pricey than the average price point of all the fifty-five, eight-person tents we have looked at, all alone this is not a negative thing. We also need to think about other factors in-depth, as we do with every tent.

When we calculate the ratings of a tent, we examine tons of conditions, finding points where the tent could beat out other very similar tents and where it is lacking. On this occasion, with an overall score of 4.5 and the price statistics above, It is simple to identify that with a price of $4999.98 MSR's HUB High-Altitude 8 Utility Base Camp is a very good deal even though it may be thought of as quite expensive when set side by side with comparable tents.

The ratings show that the build and capacity the tent provides make it a superb buy for those wanting a tent that will last for many years. It is also worth noting it is reduced by 0% from the manufactures suggested retail price. It will make an ok choice for nearly all people looking for a comfy four-season dome tent to camp with, that should serve you well for years to come.
