Tent Set Up

Some campers who bought the tent said: A It does not hold up very well in strong winds. Camping in icy conditions would be difficult. A little hard getting in and out, especially when it is raining. When it comes to the poles, it would be nice if they were a little thicker.

Summary: Favorable Reviews

People who used the tent said: The tent is just about as good as it gets without spending double or triple the price. The shelter is made with many more features than other expensive tents. It is excellent that the fly covers the whole tent and has zippered entrances on both sides. It held up great in a rainstorm on a trail. The fabric weight is well balanced for strength and lightness. I loved being able to use the gear loft for headlamps and other small things. When it comes to the setup, it is fast and simple, especially when you have done it before.

SPECS AND CONFIGURATIONS

The Genesee 4 has two doors and a peak center height of 4' 4, which is a tiny bit smaller than the average height of the 152 other 4 person tents we have studied. With 56 square feet of space inside, it is a lot smaller than some other 4-person tents, and it would be quite tight for you and, up to three other campers throughout the 3-seasons, this tent is suggested for use in, smaller tents like this one generally make a great choice for campers who appreciate spending loads of hours outside of the tent enjoying the fresh air.

Some of the cool things about dome tents are, that they are under normal circumstances lightweight, making them easy to carry around. In most all instances, tents used for backpacking are of the dome type. They are generally speaking, freestanding and very easy to set up. In calm weather, you could do without guy lines and stakes, not that this is recommended.

Dome tents are the most common of all the various types of tents you will find when camping. They tend to do better in the rain than other types, allowing rain to easily slide off the slanted sides, unlike cabin tents that have flat roofs, resulting in the rain pooling on the top of the tent. The most straightforward dome tent will have a square floor, sloped walls a couple of poles which cross in the center of the roof. Due to their construction, it is generally considered that they are ideal for up to a maximum of 6 people.

Underneath you can check out a list of the tent's pros and cons.

PROS

  1. Freestanding. The Genesee can support its own weight on any terrain. It does not even have to be staked down in most cases. But in case of strong winds, it is always best to secure it to the floor with the included steel stakes and guylines.
  2. Vestibules. Having two vestibules. Offers you somewhere to store shoes and other things that can get dirty, muddy, this is a big plus.
  3. Internal storage. It is good to see Mountainsmith has added a gear loft and pockets in the interior to store some of your stuff.
  4. More than one door. With 2 doors, it is easier to get in and out of the tent, in the middle of the night if needed.
  5. Durable, water-resistant floor. The floor material is 190td Poly PU F/R, which is a substantially thick and high-strength fabric. Meaning the base is not prone to tears and punctures. Also, the material has a 5000 mm waterproofing rating, which is pretty good for most circumstances.
  6. Tons of Positive Reviews The Genesee 4 has Plenty of fantastic Reviews
  7. Excellent Ratings The Genesee 4 has some of the best ratings of all the tents on optimumtents.com
  8. Low price. It is a great buy for a 4 person dome tent providing this much space. Not many tents available on the market provide this level of quality for only $199.95

CONS

  1. Not spacious. With a floor area of 56 square feet, the Genesee 4 is smaller than quite a lot of the 153 other 4 person tents we have looked at.
  2. Lacking in Headroom. With 9% less headroom than similar sized tents, one can see how this could be a negative factor for some people.
  3. No windows. With no windows it is not simple to keep the tent ventilated on a hot summers night.
  4. Rainfly does not completely cover the tent. The rainfly only covers the ceiling and part of the tent body from the top. Meaning it may not protect against heavy rain.
  5. Footprint not Included. There is no included footprint, The floor may be made of 190td Poly PU F/R but it is still best to protect it further with a footprint, more so on rough terrain.
  6. Out of Stock. Unfortunately this particular tent is not currently in stock. It is still on the manufactures website the last time we looked.
  7. A little heavy for backpacking. Even though the Genesee 4, looks like a small tent, it is not probably the best choice for backpacking as it weighs 6 pounds. This is quite a lot more than many other backpacking tents
  8. Sloping walls. Even though Dome tents have many qualities to rave about. The sloping sides do tend to make it all the more smaller inside.

CONCLUSION

Our Ratings: 5.0 STARS

Mountainsmith's Genesee 4 tent is perfect for bicycle & motorbike camping. There are a few other things not noted above which, were noticed and liked, while researching the model: There are set-up instructions printed on the stuff sack, The tent features clip-pole attachments for breathability and weight saving and It also has bathtub floor construction, with a high floor to keep water out..

With awesome ratings, lots of reviews and headroom of 4' and 56 square feet of space for sleeping, this tent is like your own modest apartment. This enables you together with 2 other people to spend some real quality time enjoying nature. We found a decent amount of pros about the tent that you can check out above.

If you came to this page looking for suggestions on this specific tent, our view is, it will make for an excellent purchase. In case you just happened to land on this page while looking for a brand new tent having not heard of this brand or this model before, it is possibly a good thing to check out some more comparable tents also.

Value for money: When thinking about value for your money, this tent is without a doubt cheaper than the average price of all the one hundred and fifty-two, four-person tents we have taken a look at, this by itself does not make it awesome value for money. We also need to think about other areas in-depth, as we do for every tent.

When we determine the score of an individual tent, we regard plenty of things, finding areas where the tent could exceed other similar tents and where it is coming up short. In this case, with an overall score of 5.0 and the price statistics above, It is simple to see that with a ticket price of $199.95 Mountainsmith's Genesee 4 is a superb deal and astonishingly cheap in comparison with similar tents.

The ratings show that the build and size the tent offers were not in any way skimped on to obtain a price well beneath the usual price for comparable tents. It should make a remarkable choice for nearly all campers searching for a comfortable three-season dome tent to camp in, that should serve you well for years to come.
