Tent Set Up

Easy and quick to setup

Summary: Favorable Reviews

I was excited to set up my new tent in my backyard and was pretty bummed out to find that I had a broken rain fly pole right out of the package. I still wanted to set up the tent so I splinted the pole. After set up the second rain fly pole broke within 30 minutes. Overall the tent seems decent with easy setup and a good size. But the sacrificed on quality to produce an inexpesive product. Buyer beware. I would not recommend this to anyone looking for a tent that will last more than a couple of trips.

Summary: Unfavorable Reviews

I purchased this tent for camping with my family. We have had it set up in our back yard now for a week. We just had a nasty storm go through with torrential down pour and high wind. The tent did partially collapse from the wind pushing on the flexible poles and one stake pulled out of the ground. I went out as soon as the wind died down and pulled up on the collapsed pole and it sprung right back into place and shape. After the storm I found a little water in the corners and maybe a 1/4 cup of water that came in through the ground vent while the tent was collapsed. Overall it did GREAT!!! no rips that I have found so far and still standing.

SPECS AND CONFIGURATIONS

The Red Canyon 8 has one window and one door and a maximum center height of 6' 0, which is 11 inches smaller than the average height of the 63 different 8 person tents we have examined With 170 square feet of room inside, it is significantly larger than some other 8-person tents, and it easily offers enough room for you and, up to seven other campers during the 3-seasons, this tent is suggested for use in, larger tents similar to this one often can make an awesome choice for people that enjoy having plenty of space inside the tent for sleeping and hanging out.

Many of the great points about modified dome tents are, that they are under normal circumstances not too heavy, making them easy to carry. In most all cases, tents used for backpacking are of the modified dome type. They are generally speaking, freestanding and very straightforward to set up. In calm weather, you could do without guy lines and stakes, not that this is suggested.

Modified Dome tents are the most commonly seen of all the different sorts of tents you will see when camping. They tend to do better in storms than other types, allowing rain to easily slide off the sloped sides, unlike cabin tents that have flat roofs, resulting in the rain pooling on the roof. The most basic modified dome tent will have a square footprint, slanted sides two or more poles which cross in the middle of the roof. Because of the way they are made, it is typically thought of that they are best for up to a maximum of 6 campers.

Beneath you can see an account of the tent's pros and cons.

PROS

  1. Freestanding. The Red Canyon can support its own weight on any terrain. It does not even have to be staked down in most cases. But in case of strong winds, it is always best to secure it to the ground with the included steel stakes and guylines.
  2. Internal storage. It is good to see Coleman has added a gear loft and pockets in the interior to store some of your things.
  3. Breathable. The Red Canyon's interior uses a mesh fabric on the inside of the tent, and this helps maximize the flow of air. With the extra ventilation, and this tent is great for use in the summer.
  4. Tons of Positive Reviews The Red Canyon 8 has Tons of fantastic Reviews
  5. Impressive Ratings The Red Canyon 8 has some of the best ratings of all the tents on optimumtents.com
  6. Available in other sizes. Coleman has also made this model available in Other Sizes.
  7. Low price. It is a great buy for a 8 person modified dome tent providing this much space. Not many tents available on the market give this level of quality for only $189.99 info_outline

CONS

  1. Susceptible to wind. Because of its size and shape, the Red Canyon may not do best in strong winds if it is not firmly secured with the provided guy lines and stakes. Even though the tent is listed as freestanding in all but very calm conditions, one would need to stake and tie it down correctly.
  2. Lacking in Headroom. With 11% less headroom than similar sized tents, one can see how this could be a negative thing for some people.
  3. Only one room. The Red Canyon is suggested for 8 people, some other tents of a similar size have more than one room allowing for a little more privacy.
  4. Only one door. With just one exit to get outside in the middle of the night, it may wake other campers that are sleeping.
  5. No Vestibules. If you want to keep your dirty shoes, clothes, and backpacks protected from the elements, you need store them inside the tent.
  6. Rainfly does not totally cover the tent. The rainfly only covers the ceiling and part of the tent body from the top. Meaning it might not protect against heavy downpours.
  7. Uses Fiberglass poles. Even though the poles are comprised of steel & fiberglass. Using even some fiberglass with a big tent like the Red Canyon 8 could possibly lead to problems, if there were to be extreemly windy conditions.
  8. Footprint not Included. There is no included footprint, The floor may be made of WeatherTec systems patented welded but it is still best to protect it further with a footprint, especially on rough terrain.

If you just happened to arrive on this page while browsing for a brand new tent having never heard of this manufacture or this tent before, it is perhaps a good idea to check out a few other comparable tents also.

Value for money: When thinking about value for money, this tent is without a doubt more competitive than the normal cost of all the sixty-three, eight-person tents we have taken a look at, this alone does not make it awesome value for money. We also need to take into account other things in detail, as we do with each tent.

When we tally up the overall score of a single tent, we regard tons of things, searching for areas where the tent could exceed other similar tents and where it is not quite as good. On this occasion, with an overall score of 4.8 and the price details above, It is simple to spot that with a price of $189.99 info_outline Coleman's Red Canyon 8 is a superb deal and fabulously cheap in comparison with similar tents.

The ratings show that the build and capacity the tent provides were not in any way skimped on to arrive at a price tag undoubtedly beneath the standard price for comparable tents. It could make a fantastic choice for most people looking for an appropriate three-season modified dome tent to go camping in, that should serve you well for years to come.
